We believe oak Tree Vet Centre to be the first in using a new
approach to the repair of cruciate injury. Utilising a titanium foam
wedge, we hope this to result in a faster and less troublesome recover
from this debilitating injury. The story was covered by the Edinburgh
Evening News
http://www.scotsman.com/edinburgh-evening-news/edinburgh/around-the-capital/vets_lead_in_dog_injury_solution_1_1914800
Our cruciate page has been updated to reflect the new method. |

Upgrade to our laboratory equipment. We have always been able to bring
you rapid results for haematology (blood cells) and biochemistry (liver,
kidneys, proteins, glucose, minerals etc.) but have just upgraded to the
latest offerings from Abaxis, a Vetscan 2 and an HMT5, continuing our
association with this innovative company from the time when we were only
the second in the UK to have the original Vetscan. The Vetscan is sold
as the Piccolo in human medicine and there are thousands in service in
doctors surgeries, hospitals and military hospitals world wide. Indeed,
we are told they have one in space in the International Space Station
and even one in the White House. Can be seen in detail in the

New nursing room proving to be a real boon. The last bit in the "front
corner" has been the creation of a private nurses consulting room. The
nurses can now conduct their own consultations, admissions, discharges
and laser therapy without having to fit in with spaces in the veterinary
rooms' diaries. Alistair spent many hours doing these two rooms. Can be
seen in detail in the on-line tour |

Malcolm's refurbished room, now in use
Any of you that have visited us will have seen the building works in the
front corner. Malcolm now has a light and bright refurbished room and
the link corridor no longer a building site.
Thank you for bearing with us during the work. Can be seen in detail in

Oak Tree's X-ray go digital.
Just like the change from photographic film cameras to
digital cameras, radiology is going that way too, though not quite so
fast. We've decided it's time to upgrade.

New vet, Malcolm Leitch MRCVS joins the staff We are delighted to
welcome Malcolm to the practice. A 1996 Edinburgh graduate he has been
working in a predominantly small animal practice in Dingwall,
coincidentally working for two of Alistair's contemporaries from the
Dick Vet, Jim and Charlotte Fraser.
Malcolm brings a wealth of experience to the practice and we are
delighted to have him.

Cruciate Ligament injury service Alistair has always had an interest in
orthopaedics, gaining his post graduate certificate in radiology back in
1984 and adding the certificate in orthopaedics in 1994.
With opening the hydrotherapy service earlier this year, he and the
practice are well placed to offer a comprehensive treatment and
rehabilitation programme for this common and most troublesome injury

Edinburgh Super Dog 2006 was bigger and better with perhaps twice as many
attending, helped by a delightful sunny afternoon. Again, Oak Tree Vet
Centre was delighted to be asked to be a major sponsor and we met many
friends both old and new.
We gave away a big box of torches to all the kids who were able to see
all ten differences (with our clues if necessary!) in our "Spot
the Difference Competition"
The breed competition was, I think, more difficult this year which was
reflected in lower scores. However the tip six were delighted to win their
bags of food and doggy towels courtesy of Purina Pro Plan

Double Exam Success !
We are delighted to announce that Catriona Irvine, who joined the
permanent staff in January, has been successful in her finals and will be formally
admitted onto the Veterinary Nursing list held by the Royal College of
Veterinary Surgeons.
Many of you have also met Alex Fitzgerald, who has spent many weeks
with us doing her practical training, in association with her
studying at Napier University. She too was successful in her Veterinary
Nursing finals.
All of us at the surgery are really pleased for our friends and
colleagues.

Digital Recording Facility
So that we might archive and share the still images and video
clips from the colour video endoscopes, the ultrasound and the microscope we
have now the facility to record CDs and DVDs of your pet's investigations and
show you exactly what we have seen when you see us to collect your pet after
treatment.
|
 |
Research Grade Microscope
To further our ability and interest in diagnostic cytology,
the practice invested in a research grade Prior trinoccular microscope and digital
camera system. This has allowed us not only to make a better interpretation of
samples we have taken here but to share the information gleaned electronically
with specialists in the field.

 |
Diagnostic Ultrasound.
Following Alistair's attendance at the North American Veterinary Conference,
in January 2006, he was able to survey all the new ultrasound machines on offer
and shortly afterwards our chosen selection arrived at Oak Tree. From pregnancy
diagnosis to more involved techniques we are developing this very interesting
and non invasive treatment modality to enhance our diagnostic capability.

Blood pressure Measurement We have invested in
a blood pressure measurement to assess this important health parameter in our
patients, particularly our feline ones. It is much more technologically
demanding to assess the blood pressure in a pet compared to the readily available
devises sold in chemists for people and our device uses a Doppler crystal to
actually detect the blood flow in the tiny arteries below the cuff. Just like
ourselves and the doctor, we have found that lower and more accurate values are
often secured by our team of veterinary nurses.
|
 |
Video Endoscopy
We have invested in video endoscopy. Endoscopy to allow us to
look inside your pet without conventional surgery. Although a general
anaesthetic is needed, there is none of the discomfort or risk associated with
conventional surgery such as laparotomy.
We decided on video equipment which gives a far superior view
compared to the older and cheaper fibre-optic endoscopes commonly found in
veterinary practice. The video scopes have a tiny camera in their tip and
this can be steered by the hand controls and allow us to see lesions and take biopsies
or retrieve foreign bodies. The image is produced in magnified view on a TV
screen and we can record the procedure allowing you to see what we've got up to
or, if required, send the DVD to an expert for a second opinion for something
strange.

Edinburgh Superdog
Oak Tree Veterinary Centre was one of the named supporting sponsors of the inaugural
Edinburgh Superdog , held in Cammo Estate on 18th September.
An enjoyable time was had by the large turnout and we hope that the event
will become an annual celebration of dog ownership.
We organised two competitions one for the adults who were invited to try and
name the 20 breeds.
The winner, winning the "Milbemax" picnic back pack was Anne
Hutchison with a very commendable 14.5 out of 20
Runners up winning a "Metacam" fleece body warmer were Jeanette
Abernethy, Irene Allan and Karen Homes.
Well done to them and thank you to all who entered. It was a popular idea and
will be back if we are so start swatting up now!
There was also a "spot the difference" competition for the juniors
and one winner won a cool Polaroid Camera and ten runners up winning beanie
babies. Thanks to all who entered.
